School Closures and Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)
All Kyrene schools will remain closed for the remainder of the school year. District offices are operational, but school and District offices will be closed to the public throughout the closures.
Due to the volume of information that has been added to this page, we have created subpages to help our community more easily access and navigate the information contained here during school closures. On a desktop/laptop, those subpages can be found on the left side of your screen. On a mobile device, those subpages are located in the dropdown menu directly above. Finally, for your convenience, all of these pages are also accessible at the following links:
- Instructional Resources for Learning at Home
- Meal Service Information
- Contacts and Community Resources
- Community FAQs
- Employee Information
Kyrene's website can be translated by using the "Translate" dropdown in the toolbar. Documents may be translated via Google Translate.
Message from the superintendent
Dear Kyrene Community,
I first want to thank you for the outpouring of support for the District’s decision to suspend classes as we work to contain any potential spread of the COVID-19 virus. It was a decision that was considered very carefully, and when it came down to it, the preponderance of the scientific and public health research suggested that it was in the best interests of our students, their families, our staff and the community to take every possible measure to contain spread of the virus.
School closures moved our district from a cautionary mode to one of active prevention and protection. The World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of health (NIH) have all identified social distancing among the most effective strategies to reduce the transmission of illness in the absence of vaccines or antiviral medications. Closing schools helps support this strategy.
While children, thankfully, seem less susceptible to complications of the virus, they are likely vectors for its spread. We could not take a chance of exposing teachers, family and community members who have secondary health issues (diabetes, heart disease, lung disease or individuals undergoing treatment for cancer) to the virus. Our goal here is to 'flatten the curve of transmission' so that we protect those who are most vulnerable and not overwhelm our healthcare system.
On this page, you will find extensive resources, including information about continued meal service for students, at-home learning resources, and answers to frequently asked questions. Take care of each other, and thank you again for your support.
Jan Vesely, Ed.D.
